The Magnolia ‘Jane’ is part of the Little Girl Series of hybrid magnolias that were developed in the 1900s. Along with ‘Ann,’ ‘Betty,’ ‘Judy,’ ‘Pinkie,’ ‘Randy,’ ‘Ricki,’ and ‘Susan,’ the other seven hybrid, Magnolia ‘Jane’ was created by William Kosar at the National Arboretum in Washington.

- Potassium deficiency shows itself when leaf edges turn bright yellow, but the inner leaf stays green. Older leaves show symptoms first, and leaf edges soon turn brown.
- A lack of nitrogen is indicated by a widespread yellowing. Older, inner leaves are the first to yellow. As the yellowing progresses, it eventually touches young leaves as well.

Is my Magnolia ‘Jane’ sunburned?
It is quite easy to find out if your Magnolia ‘Jane’ (Magnoliaceae) has been burned by the sun. Just like on us, your plant will change color in this case, it will start to turn yellow or white.
As we saw above, if your Magnolia ‘Jane’ receives too much water or not enough light, the leaves may also change color.
The bottom of the yellow leaves with a shaded area closer to the base can be examined to determine if they have been sunburned. If this part remains greener, the yellow leaf is most likely sunburned and not something else.

Should I leave my Magnoliaceae in direct sunlight?
No! If your Magnoliaceae (or Magnolia ‘Jane’) has the symptoms described above, don’t leave it in direct sunlight, that’s the reason why your Magnolia ‘Jane’ is in such a state!

Why are my Magnoliaceae leaves drooping or wilting ?
In most cases, this happens when your Magnoliaceae lacks water. This is especially the case for large plants, naturally they need more water than others.
An easy way to know if your Magnoliaceae is lacking water is to under-weigh its pot, if it looks light, it means that the soil and the roots are probably quite dry, and therefore need water!
In order to ensure that the roots of your plant receive the water’s benefits, you must first moisten the soil in the container if it is absolutely dry. One common error is to immediately drown the Magnolia ‘Jane’ after a dry period in the belief that it requires a lot of water.
This is the case, but giving too much water at once is the best way to finish it off, you should actually water the soil normally, resuming a quiet watering rhythm.
Caring Tips for Magnoliaceae
Your plant needs water to survive, but it’s crucial to balance the amount and timing of watering. As we previously mentioned, overwatering could be catastrophic for your Magnoliaceae.
Touching the soil will let you know whether your plant needs water or not; if it still feels damp, it’s generally best to wait a few more days.
Always keep temperatures stable
It is also a good idea to keep your Magnoliaceae at a stable temperature (especially if it is kept indoors!). At GreenShack, we generally recommend staying in the 65 and 85 degrees F range. Of course, do not place your Magnoliaceae near a source of hot (or cold) air such as A/C units, radiators or the like.
Keep your Magnolia ‘Jane’ Dust-Free
This one is about houseplants. Your indoor plants’ leaves get dusty just like your furniture does. The problem is that this might prevent photosynthesis from beginning, which would result in the plants gradually losing their color.
This would also make the pests happy, a real descent into hell for your Magnolia ‘Jane’.
Take a microfiber cloth and gently massage the plant’s leaves to get rid of the dust. Use a damp cloth to make dust removal easier, but avoid using corrosive materials like rubbing alcohol!
Keep drainage in mind
If you tend to overwater, you need to pay attention to your drainage, and we advise choosing a saucer and a pot with drainage holes if they are not already there.
In the meantime, if you don’t have holes in your pots, you can add volcanic rocks (or any rocks with holes) at the bottom of your pot, this way it will create a channel so that the water doesn’t stay in your skin too much (to avoid that roots start to rot!)
