NOTE: In this article, Majesty palm and Ravenea rivularis may be used interchangeably; in fact, Ravenea rivularis is the botanical name for Majesty palm.
The palm can grow to over 100 feet tall in its natural habitat. It is rare in the wild and is now grown mostly as an indoor tree, which is about 10 feet tall. It has green fronds on multiple stems. It is similar to a kentia palm when young and a royal palm when mature.
It’s high praise that these are two of the most attractive indoor palms. It is a difficult plant to grow indoors because it requires humid air, lots of bright indirect light, and consistent humidity. It is referred to as a “challenging” plant by houseplant experts.
Why does my Ravenea rivularis roots have rot?
If left untreated, root rot on your Majesty palm (Ravenea rivularis) can be fatal. For this reason, if the symptoms appear, we highly advise that you adhere to our recommendations to keep your plant alive: Blackened and softened roots.
Why does my Majesty palm have gray mold spots?
A particular fungus known as gray mold spots spreads quickly and frequently damages flowers. This fungus is probably to blame if you see any brown (or gray) spots. If you disregard these warning signs, your plant could die.

When you understand the root of the issue, the solution makes perfect sense. The majority of the time, it is caused by the Ravenea rivularis being overwatered. We urge you to cut off the infected roots and leaves, remove the affected sections of the plant, and then repot your plant in a fresh container with sterile potting soil.

Our Solution
You only need to act in accordance with the symptoms listed above. You can address a potassium or nitrogen deficiency by buying a particular soil, and a gardening store consultant will be able to advise you on how to do that. Furthermore, you can also limit how frequently you water your plants.
Is my Majesty palm sunburned?
It is quite easy to find out if your Majesty palm (Ravenea rivularis) has been burned by the sun. Just like on us, your plant will change color in this case, it will start to turn yellow or white.
As we saw above, if your Majesty palm receives too much water or not enough light, the leaves may also change color.
The bottom of the yellow leaves with a shaded area closer to the base can be examined to determine if they have been sunburned. If this part remains greener, the yellow leaf is most likely sunburned and not something else.
Why are my Majesty palm leaves turning brown?
A plant’s browning leaves are typically a symptom that it has been sunburned and has been exposed to excessive amounts of direct sunlight. Don’t worry; your plant probably won’t perish as a result, but its growth will be negatively impacted.
Should I leave my Ravenea rivularis in direct sunlight?
No! If your Ravenea rivularis (or Majesty palm) has the symptoms described above, don’t leave it in direct sunlight, that’s the reason why your Majesty palm is in such a state!

As stated in the paragraph above, the cure is straightforward: simply position your plant’s Majesty palm so that it is out of direct sunlight. With proper watering and this method, your plant should quickly come back to life.
Why are my Ravenea rivularis leaves drooping or wilting ?
When you become dehydrated, this usually happens. Large plants are more vulnerable since they need more water on a regular basis than smaller plants.
An easy way to know if your Ravenea rivularis is lacking water is to under-weigh its pot, if it looks light, it means that the soil and the roots are probably quite dry, and therefore need water!
Our Solution
If the soil in your plant’s pot is completely dry, you will need to start by moistening it so that the roots will also benefit from the water. A common mistake is to drown the Majesty palm right after a dry period thinking that it needs a lot of water.
This is the case, but giving too much water at once is the best way to finish it off, you should actually water the soil normally, resuming a quiet watering rhythm.
Caring Tips for Ravenea rivularis
Water Occasionally
Water is necessary for your plant to live, but timing and amount of watering must be balanced. Overwatering could have disastrous effects on your own name, as we already mentioned.
The best way to know if your plant needs water or not is to touch the soil, if you feel it is still wet, it is probably a good idea to wait a few more days.
Always keep temperatures stable
It is also a good idea to keep your Ravenea rivularis at a stable temperature (especially if it is kept indoors!). At GreenShack, we generally recommend staying in the 65 and 85 degrees F range. Of course, do not place your Ravenea rivularis near a source of hot (or cold) air such as A/C units, radiators or the like.
Keep your Majesty palm Dust-Free
This one is about houseplants. Your indoor plants’ leaves get dusty just like your furniture does. The problem is that this might prevent photosynthesis from beginning, which would result in the plants gradually losing their color.
For your Majesty palm, this would be a true descent into hell, and it would also appease the pests.
To remove the dust from the leaves of your plant, take a microfiber cloth and gently rub the leaves. You can wet the cloth to make it easier to remove the dust, but never use corrosive products (such as rubbing alcohol!)
Keep drainage in mind
If you tend to overwater, you need to pay attention to your drainage, and we advise choosing a saucer and a pot with drainage holes if they are not already there.
If your pots don’t already have holes in them, you can add volcanic rocks (or any other pebbles with holes) to the bottom of your pot in the meantime. This will assist in creating a channel and keep the water from pooling there for an extended period of time, protecting the roots from decay.
